Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is one of the best bird sanctuaries in Kerala. Set in the Kumarakom Backwaters on the banks of Vembanad Lake, the bird sanctuary is a favourite haunt of migratory birds. House boats and motor boats are available on hire for bird watching cruises on the lake. Best time to visit is between June and August and for the Migratory birds, November to February

This is 32 miles from Kochin and can be a day trip if we rent a motorbike or a nights stay in Kottayam. Kottayam can be reached by train or bus.

Around Vypin Island

Vypin Island

Vypin island is a very local place with a busy fishing port. Every sunset sees an influx of local visitors to watch the sunset at Cherai beach.. It has an abundance of fishing nets (many more than Kochin) and roads that run around the backwaters. We take a ferry at the top of Kochin either with push bikes or motorbike. Cherai beach is 13 miles from the ferry port.

Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary

This is quite near Fort Kochin, and is reached by ferry to Ernakulam and it is less than 3km walk. Easy day trip.

Mangalavanam is an ecologically sensitive area situated at the centre of kochi covering about 2.74 hectares. It also houses a shallow tidal lake connected with Kochi its role is to keeping the city's air pollution under check. The area is a roosting place for many kinds of resident and migratory birds. As most of the birds are migratory the best time to visit is from January to mid-March. Start your visit as early as possible with binoculars otherwise you will miss the birds.

Thats done Kochin! So now Alappuzha aka Alleppey

So we are either in Kochin because we did the bird sanctuary by motor bike, or we are in Kottayam. Now we need to be in Alleypally! Can be done by bus or train from either Kochin (Train Ernakulam) or Kottayam. From Kottayam there is a ferry service, apparently!

Alleypally is a mosquito heaven! Be ye warned!!!!

Alappuzha is a bit of a shit hole; too many tourists around 400 boats moored or taking tourists on trips and it is not the cleanest place on earth to put it mildly!!

One day here and then there is a 9 hour ferry trip along the backwaters to Kollam.

Food is included in the tickets.
